BIOGRAPHY

About Gianna

Raised in Virginia, Gianna Macedon is a young mezzo-soprano with an unusually wide vocal range and a primary focus on classical repertoire and opera. She is currently a Vocal Performance and Physics major at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, with a minor in Italian and membership in the Glynn Family Honors Program.

Gianna made her operatic debut in 2019 as Spirit 2 in The Magic Flute with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center Opera House. In 2022, she participated in the Washington National Opera Institute, performing opera scenes at the REACH and appearing in the Kennedy Center's The Weird and Wonderful World of Opera. At Notre Dame, she has performed with Opera Notre Dame as the Witch in Dido and Aeneas (2025) and as understudy for the Old Woman in Candide (2025).

Her summers have taken her further into the repertoire. With the Opera Theatre of the Rockies Vocal Arts Festival, she performed scenes from Hansel and Gretel as Hansel and from The Magic Flute as Spirit 3 (2024), and returned in 2025 to sing scenes as Hansel, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, the Abbess in Suor Angelica, and "A Perfect Relationship" from Bells Are Ringing. She will return again for the 2026 festival, and this summer will also be conducting music research at Notre Dame as part of the Glynn Family Honors Program. At the AAMS Emerging Young Artists Intensive, she performed a scene from Les Contes d'Hoffmann as Nicklausse, singing "Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour" on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage.  She received an Honorable Mention at the 2025 AAMS International Voice Competition, took 3rd place in classical at the 2024 Indiana NATS competition, and was a preliminary qualifier for the 2025 NATS National Student Auditions in musical theatre.

Sacred music remains close to her heart. Gianna sings with the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir and Sacred Music Chamber Choir, and has performed with the ND Basilica Schola and ND Chorale, including solos in Handel's Messiah in 2023 and 2024. When home in Virginia, she serves as a cantor and soloist at Our Lady of Angels and St. Elizabeth Anne Seton.

Gianna desires to make beautiful music to help others discover the gift that they truly are to the world, knowing that beauty nourishes the heart and imagination and brings out the good in each person.
